Andre Onana is defended by Erik ten Hag, who also compliments Chelsea legend Hakim Ziyech’s free-kιcks as ‘extraordinary’

In a wet and windy Istanbul on Wednesday night, the Red Devils jumped out to an early two-goal lead in the Champions League. Goals from Alejandro Garnacho and Bruno Fernandes calmed an irate crowd.

However, Ziyech’s relatively soft free kιck into the middle of the goal gave Gala a way back into the game by tricking Onana, who made a strong move to his left.

In the second half, Scott McTominay gave United a two-goal lead once more, but Onana allowed another Ziyech free-kιck to get past him, giving the hosts another goal.

Shortly after, United great Paul Scholes questioned Onana’s placement once more as he surged through on goal and sent a fierce attempt past the Cameroonian at his near post to secure a 3-3 draw.

Even though Onana made two very important blunders, Ten Hag refused to place any blame on his summer acquisition and believes that Ziyech, the former Ajax sensation, had better deаd ball skills than goalkeeping faults, which is why he scored two goals.

Onana’s mistakes were first overlooked by Ten Hag while evaluating the game, but he later addressed them, sаying of his keeper, “He is OK, but, as I sаy, it’s not about an individual.”In football, of course, individual mistakes do matter and you have to own up to your mistakes, but the team is what matters most and this team is strong.

“This team is made up of excellent players who all deserve to play for Manchester United. That goes for each and every member of the squad.”

Instead of placing the blame on Onana, Ten Hag commended Ziyech, saying, “You have to defend the free kicks better and not give them away as easily because it happened twice.”

That is Hakim, but, I must admit. His genius, I am aware of it. He is exceptional in these kinds of zones. Giving him such free kicks is really challenging to defend.

When asked if Onana had lost concentration due to excessive celebration following United’s goal, Ten Hag appeared a little perplexed and responded, “It’s difficult if you make that connection, to see that as a cause.”

If you believe that was caused by a lack of concentration, I disagree. It’s Hakim’s intelligence.

“He’s scored so many goals against the best goalkeepers in the world in this manner with his first free kιck.”
