Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou said after his team’s contentious victory against Liverpool that he would be pleased to see VAR eliminated from Premier League matches.
Ange Postecoglou, the Spurs’ manager, is in favor of doing away with video review.
During the weekend’s 2-1 victory over Liverpool, Spurs benefited from a mistake made by VAR Darren England, who mistakenly ruled out a goal scored by Luis Diaz due to offside.
Postecoglou said, “I would (scrap VAR) in its current form” on the same day that the Premier League and referees’ leaders pledged to regularly broadcasting the audio of VAR judgments. Technology hasn’t caught up to our level yet, in my opinion. I have zero objections to using technology near the goal line.We have high hopes for VAR’s ability to reduce mistakes, but experience suggests that the opposite is true.
“The fast-paced nature of English football was one of my favorite things about living there. Getting rid of it seems counterproductive. The delay in making a decision has been frustrating for everyone, and last week it seemed like they were moving too quickly. The technology isn’t there yet, in my opinion.
Gary O’Neil, the Wolves’ manager, expects his team to make some mistakes again this weekend. When asked if he agreed with England manager Gareth Southgate, who suggested this week that football was better before VAR, O’Neil responded, “It’s getting close to there now.” I don’t understand it any better now than I did before.
Either we make some changes to make it better, or we throw it out and start over. I have my doubts that we will always arrive at the correct conclusion by Sunday.
