Maguire started and played the full match as England defeated Italy 3-1 on Tuesday night to qualify for Euro 2024.
The Manchester United center back did not hear any boos last Friday when he captained England against Australia, but all eyes were on Jordan Henderson.
The former Liverpool midfielder has been called hypocritical for moving to Saudi Arabia, where homosexuality is outlawed, given his previous support for the LGBTQ+ community.
On Tuesday night, Henderson came off the bench to largely positive reactions from the crowd after receiving some criticism for his performance.
Maguire has little tolerance for dissent and believes that booing fans have no place in England.
He stated, “Real England fans don’t boo players.” To paraphrase, “they don’t boo players who play for their country and dedicate their life to playing and do everything they can to make this country have good memories and special moments for them, the fans, and their families.”Many of the most devoted England supporters I know have been cheering for me since day one. They’re behind Jordan and me, and I can hear them breathing down our necks.
“There are a lot of cheers and some jeers, but those people aren’t England fans,” they yelled.
Henderson, speaking to Channel 4 before Tuesday’s game, reflected on the response he received the week prior. Sure, it stings.
“It hurts, but I’ve received enough criticism over the course of my career to be able to cope with stuff like that. Every time you pull on that shirt, it’s a proud moment, and I’m playing for my teammates, for my nation, and for the fans. And I know I won’t be the last player to hear the boos.Henderson has argued that he brings progressive values to Saudi Arabia, hence his presence there is for the better.
There’s no downside to having someone with his views in Saudi Arabia, he argued.
They recоgnized the grоups I’ve helped in the pаst even befоre I went tо Sаudi аrаbiа. It hаs never been suggested thаt I shоuldn’t dо this оr shоuldn’t sаy thаt. This hаs never been а prоblem befоre.
All they want in return for accepting us is that we respect their values, religion, and culture, and I have done that.
