Chelsea may be about to make their own Jadon Sancho mistake with Barcelona deal eyed

Chelsea are facing a serious contractual dilemma. Jadon Sancho told not to use first team facilities

Chelsea may be on the verge of repeating the error committed by Jadon Sancho by releasing an additional talented winger this summer. Since Marcos Alonso’s contract is coming to a close, Barcelona is seeking a replacement left-back. The Catalonians consider Ian Maatsen, a versatile winger or full-back, to be the ideal candidate to join them.

Alternatively, if they wait until the summer, the 21-year-old could become available on a free transfer; his current contract at Stamford Bridge expires on June 30. Barca will reportedly finalize its decision regarding the signing of Maatsen prior to the January opening of the winter transfer window, as reported by Diario Sport.

It is believed that Alonso could remain with the La Liga club for an additional two seasons if he agrees to reduce his £100,000-per-week salary. Additionally, the club are considering bringing back junior player Alex Valle, who is currently on loan at Levante, to strengthen their defense.

Nevertheless, Barça is reportedly considering external alternatives, with Maatsen ranking near the top of the list. Activation of the option to extend Maatsen’s contract with Chelsea by an additional year, until the summer of 2025, has stalled negotiations.

The Dutchman was an indispensable member of Burnley’s Championship-winning squad the previous season. He has reportedly impressed Barcelona recruiters for years, who have been monitoring his performances at Turf Moor.

Although Maatsen has made eight appearances for Chelsea this season, he has yet to make his Premier League debut. It is uncertain how Maatsen will figure into Mauricio Pochettino’s long-term plans, and it is probable that he will not be with the club come the following season.

Burnley submitted a £31.5 million offer for Maatsen on the final day of the transfer window this summer, but the Dutchman declined the offer. The winger reportedly received two contract proposals from Chelsea prior to Burnley’s offer, one of which was reportedly more valuable than what he would have earned by signing a permanent deal with the reigning second-tier champions.

Since then, however, no progress has been achieved. In January, if terms cannot be agreed upon within the next two months, it is probable that the west Londoners will consider offers.
