Belgium thrash Azerbaijan, and Romelu Lukaku enjoys a memorable first half

In a 5-0 demolition of 10-man Azerbaijan in Euro 2024 qualifying, Romelu Lukaku scored four goals in 20 minutes of play.

On loan from Chelsea, striker Romelu Lukaku scored the game-opening goal with a header from a cross by Jeremy Doku. Eddy Pascual received a second yellow card for a foul on Lukaku.

The 30-year-old scored his third goal just before halftime, and he scored his fourth after 37 minutes. He was replaced just before halftime. The late goal by Leandro Trossard, an Arsenal attacker, sealed the deal.

After Northern Ireland’s David Healy set the previous record of 13 goals in 2008 and Poland’s Robert Lewandowski tied it in 2016, Lukaku broke the record with 14 goals in a European Championship qualification campaign.

With this victory, Belgium clinched their spot in next year’s competition and topped Group F, surpassing Austria in the process.

In the other group match, Sweden defeated Estonia 2-0 despite not qualifying.

After a 2-2 draw with Bulgaria in Group G, Serbia advanced to Euro 2024. In the other group, group champions Hungary defeated Montenegro 3-1, with goals from Dominik Szoboszlai, a midfielder for Liverpool.

After falling behind 2-1 and 1-0 in Budapest, it appeared like Serbia might only need a draw or Montenegro to lose to Hungary to guarantee their spot in Germany.

Szoboszlai scored twice in the span of two minutes to change the tide for Hungary in the second half, but Serbia’s Srdan Babic equalized in the 82nd minute.

The champions of Group A Georgia was defeated by Spain 3-1 at Valladolid.
