According to reports from England, Chelsea has agreed to sell Romelu Lukaku to Roma for £37 million at the end of the 2023/24 season. The Belgian player moved to Roma on loan from Chelsea in August 2023. He had a brilliant start at the Italian capital team, scoring 7 goals in 8 appearances in all competitions.
The 30-year-old did not take part in Chelsea’s pre-season at all and looks unlikely to ever play for the Blues again. But when his loan contract with Roma expires at the end of this season, he still has 2 years left on his contract with the Blues. According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Chelsea has agreed to “sell Lukaku” for a fixed fee of 37 million pounds next summer. The London team accepted to suffer heavy losses to push away a star who no longer wanted to play for them.
The Blues spent £97.5 million to re-sign the striker from Inter Milan in the summer of 2021. However, he struggled to find his best form upon returning to Stamford Bridge, scoring just scored 8 goals in Premier League 2021/22. Lukaku spent last season on loan at Inter, scoring 10 goals in Serie A. After returning to Chelsea, he could not find common ground with new coach Thomas Tuchel and continued to be loaned out.
This experienced striker is reviving strongly at Roma with his former teacher Jose Mourinho. After scoring two goals in Roma’s 4-1 win over Cagliari last weekend, Lukaku said: “As I said before, Mourinho and I have a special relationship. He knows me and my children well.”
“He is someone I can trust and he also believes in me. Mourinho is very tough, but that is the only way for me to grow.”
Despite Lukaku’s brilliant form, Roma did not have a smooth start to the season. They are currently ranked 10th in the Serie A rankings, winning 3, drawing 2 and losing 3 in 8 matches so far.
