Romelu Lukaku celebrates after scoring for Belgium against Azerbaijan in November 2023.

Romelu Lukaku, a striker for Chelsea on loan, increased his already excellent total of goals scored for his country from 79 to 83 on Sunday as he scored four goals for Belgium in the first 37 minutes of a 5-0 victory over Azerbaijan.

The 30-year-old, who is presently on a season-long loan at Roma, scored the first goal in the sides’ Euro 2024 qualifying match after 17 minutes and finished with a hat-trick in the first 30 minutes in Brussels.

And with only 37 minutes remaining, the former Manchester United and Everton forward made it 4-0 as he broke past the Azerbaijani defense and scored with his right foot.

The visitors had to have thought they were in for a shock, but the second half was far more evenly balanced, and Belgium didn’t score again until Leandro Trossard of Arsenal completed a thrilling victory for the Red Devils in the ninetieth minute.

Lukaku has scored an incredible 83 goals in 113 international games, including 15 goals in just nine appearances for his nation in 2023.

Lukaku, who has nine goals in 14 games for Roma this season, was recently greeted with some 40,000 whistles from Inter fans upon his return to Milan. Lukaku had reportedly flirted with their rivals Juventus and AC Milan in the summer.

A return to Chelsea appears improbable, especially given that the Blues have found some success under new manager Mauricio Pochettino, thus the forward’s future is still up in the air.

Lukaku’s contract at Stamford Bridge expires in 2026, and he will return to the west London team following the conclusion of his loan at Roma.

Following their victory on Sunday, Belgium had already secured their berth in their group and qualified for Euro 2024.

In late March, the Red Devils and Lukaku will travel to London for a friendly match at Wembley against England.
