Chelsea have a long history of winter deals and some of them have even been successful.

No one can predict what will happen at Chelsea this month but they are unlikely to be as busy as January 2023. Eight players arrived at Stamford Bridge this time last year and none have kept up their form constant impression. However, busy winters are nothing new at Chelsea. Here are five of the best January deals and five against them in West London over the years.

The best

Branislav Ivanovic – Didn’t attract much attention in his £10 million contract from Lokomotiv Moscow but he spent a decade at Stamford Bridge, played 377 matches and won 3 Premier League titles and 3 FA Cups , 1 League Cup, 1 Champions League and Europa League. This full-back always brings reliability.

Gary Cahill  – One of the great servants during his 7 and a half seasons at Chelsea, he cost just £7 million in 2012. Ultimately won 8 trophies, made 290 appearances and scored 25 goals from the position central defender. A great bargain.

Nemanja Matic – The Serbian player’s 21 million pound contract in 2014 was truly valuable when he was sold for nearly double the price to Manchester United, after winning the Premier League and FA championship once. Cup.

Olivier Giroud – A player who is more appreciated after leaving. Giroud did not shine too bright at Chelsea but is still highly appreciated, he is still developing strongly with Milan at the age of 37.

David Luiz – The Brazilian centre-back was vital in Chelsea’s first Champions League title in 2012 and he excelled before joining PSG for a record fee for a defender in 2014.

Worst

Alexandre Pato – One-time prodigy was loaned from Corinthians in the second half of the 2015/2016 season but was not physically fit and only appeared twice – despite scoring in his debut against Aston Villa..

Juan Cuadrado – He signed after an impressive 2014 World Cup with Colombia. Cuadrado appeared 15 times, did not contribute any goals or assists, and was loaned to Juventus for 2 seasons before officially joining the Old Lady.

Gonzalo Higuain – An impressive goalscorer at Real Madrid, Napoli and Juventus, but the 2019 contract with the Argentine striker on loan was unsuccessful.

Joao Felix – One of eight players who arrived in the middle of last season for a huge loan fee. He had an unforgettable start to life against Fulham when he was sent off and overall had a poor half of the season.

Fernando Torres – The Spanish striker became the sixth most expensive player in history when he completed a £50 million deal from Liverpool but it turns out he is past his prime. Torres provided some memorable moments – including a goal against Barcelona in the Champions League, but he did not score enough goals for his fee.
