Chelsea to lose over £60m in Lukaku deal

Chelsea to lose over £60m in Lukaku deal as  transfer fee with Roma is agreed for Belgian striker in summer 2024

Chelsea are reported to have already agreed a permanent transfer fee for the sale of Romelu Lukaku to Roma when his loan finishes next summer.

WHAT HAPPENED? Romelu Lukaku’s loan at the Serie A club will finish in the summer of 2019, and Chelsea might lose more than £60 million if they decide to sell him to Roma. In the summer of 2021, the Blues paid Inter’s Lukaku a then-club record £97.5 million to re-sign him, but according to Fabrizio Romano, the two clubs have agreed on a £37 million transfer fee to send him to Roma permanently.

THE BIGGER PICTURE: Only eight Premier League goals were scored by Lukaku for Chelsea during the 2021–2022 season, and he angered the team and supporters by speaking in an interview with Sky Italia about how he was “not happy” and how he wanted to go back to Inter. He did return to the team for the 2022–2023 season on loan, but that arrangement was not extended. Lukaku has scored seven goals in eight games across all competitions since joining Roma on loan and reunited with Jose Mourinho.
