CHRIS SUTTON: Erik ten Hag isn’t living up to Man United’s huge expectations, and the scrutiny on him grows with every sub-standard game

Manchester United may not be in as dire a crisis as they were during Jose Mourinho’s tenure, when he often resorted to blaming others and appeared increasingly isolated with his eccentric and egotistical remarks.

However, Erik ten Hag faces mounting pressure to address the current situation swiftly, as the scrutiny on him intensifies with each below-par performance.

Manchester United has a long history of high expectations, and this standard is unlikely to change. Winning only two of their first five Premier League games, with some luck involved in those victories, falls short of the club’s standards.

There is sympathy for Ten Hag to some extent, as he couldn’t control certain situations such as the Mason Greenwood and Antony incidents. It’s unclear if he can do much about any perceived prima donna behavior from Jadon Sancho, as Ten Hag has been straightforward in his assessments of the player.

While Mourinho, during his tenure, had reached a point where he had lost the dressing room, it’s not at that stage yet for Ten Hag.

Facing Bayern Munich on Wednesday will pose a challenge, but Manchester United needs to exhibit a better version of themselves when they visit Burnley in the Premier League on Saturday.
