Cincinnati Reds to sign LHP Brent Suter

Another proven arm added to a burgeoning bullpen mix.

You may remember Brent Suter from such episodes as ‘spent seven seasons with the Milwaukee Brewers,’ or ‘struck out Joey Votto three times in 21 PA against the future Hall of Famer.’

Reports: Reds, LHP Brent Suter agree to 1-year deal – 810 The Spread

But if you don’t, you’ll have some brand-new recollections of him playing for the Cincinnati Reds. This is due to the fact that the parties came to an agreement on Thursday over a one-year contract that will guarantee him $3 million and give the club an option to extend the contract until 2025. This was said by Robert Murray of FanSided, the source of the report.

With his career 86.5 mph fastball, Suter has mastered the art of producing weak contact. Many of his peripherals indicate that he’s a far poorer pitcher than his career 3.49 ERA would imply since he depends so heavily on having the ball put in play and on that weak contact, but the Reds are betting that he’s exactly the kind of guy who defies the FIP model.

Luckily for the Reds, Suter has also demonstrated a tendency to strike out right-handed hitters with some skill; as a member of the Colorado Rockies last year, his.585 OPS against RHH actually exceeded the.792 OPS he gave up to LHH, for example.

It’s an additional solid complement to a pitching staff that is starting to grow. As a free agent, Suter joins Emilio Pagan, Nick Martinez, and the returning Buck Farmer. These players are expected to be added to the bullpen along with Alexis Diaz, Lucas Sims, Sam Moll, and Fernando Cruz. Ian Gibaut, Alex Young, Tejay Antone, and any of the few young starters who don’t make the Opening Day rotation will likely fight for the final spot in the bullpen.

The phrase “options” is crucial in this situation because Moll, Young, Antone, and Cruz all have options left. If necessary, the Reds front office may choose to park them at AAA while everyone is healthy and playing well.

Here at Red Reporter, we’re happy to have Brent on board. As you are all aware, he is a graduate of Moeller.
