CONGRATULATIONS: Bruno Fernandes has tied the record for most Goal of the Month awards in the Premier League

On September 23, the Portuguese midfielder scored the game-winning goal with a magnificent volley, helping the Red Devils to earn all three points in a narrow 1-0 victory away against Burnley. The contest was decided by a volley.

After receiving a long-range pass over the top from center defender Jonny Evans, Fernandes made a deft run in behind Burnley’s defensive line and then blasted a magnificent volley past James Trafford into the far corner of the goal.

The No. 8 for Man United is the only player in the history of the Premier League to win three Goal of the Month accolades, tying him with the newcomer Andros Townsend of Luton Town.

Fernandes won the Golden Boot of the Month title for the first time in June 2020 for the goal he scored against Brighton & Hove Albion. He then won the honor for the second time in February 2021 for the goal he scored against Everton with a beautiful chip.

Townsend, on the other hand, won the individual honor three times while playing for Crystal Palace: once in March 2017, once in December 2018, and once in September 2021 with Everton.

In addition to Townsend, Fernandes is now a member of the elite club of three-time winners, taking him ahead of a group of two-time winners that includes Mohamed Salah, Kevin De Bruyne, Son Heung-min, and Miguel Almiron. Townsend is now a three-time winner.

This is the seventh time that a player from Manchester United has won the monthly reward. Players from the Red Devils have won the award more often than players from any other club in the division. The 29-year-old’s current accolade also marks the seventh time that a Man United player has received the monthly prize.

In order to win the GOTM award for September, Fernandes had to fend off competition from his teammate at Manchester United, Hannibal Mejbri, as well as from Leandro Trossard of Arsenal, Jhon Duran of Aston Villa, Joachim Andersen of Crystal Palace, Julian Alvarez of Manchester City, Miguel Almiron of Newcastle United, and Callum Hudson-Odoi of Nottingham Forest.

After scoring the game-winning goal for his team against Burnley, Fernandes told TNT Sports, “It was a great pass from Jonny [Evans].” Because I am aware of the fact that he is capable of playing the ball in behind with both feet, I was certain that he would be able to make this pass, so I waited for him.

“[Burnley] gave some space – it was tough to get in behind them because they worked the line well, so it was a great ball, a great finish and we’re really happy with the win.”

Since joining Manchester United in January of 2020, Fernandes has racked up a total of 66 goals for the club in 195 games across all competitions. Of those 195 games, 46 of them have been played in the Premier League.

When Man United, who are now tenth in the Premier League table, take on Sheffield United on October 21, the midfielder will have the opportunity to add to his record of goals scored for the season.
