‘Difficult choice’ looms for Chelsea as Ian Maatsen issues warning about a decline in playing time

After a brilliant season on loan in the Championship, the 21-year-old had plenty of interest from clubs in the summer, but he turned down a permanent transfer to Burnley to stay at Chelsea and challenge for a starting spot.

Despite seeing action as a substitute seven times for a total of 107 minutes this season, Maatsen has failed to earn a starting spot in the Premier League.

He was demoted to the Under-21 team after losing his spot in the most recent round of international fixtures, after being called up to the senior Netherlands side in September.

Even if he may have to leave Chelsea in the end, Maatsen is still holding out hope of earning a spot on the Dutch national team for the European Championships next summer.

In аn interview witҺ аlgemeen ԀаgblаԀ, Mааtsen reveаleԀ Һis secret Ԁesire tо win tҺe Eurоpeаn CҺаmpiоnsҺip.

During training [in September], I believe I also did a good job of impressing the national coach.

In order to do that, I am aware that I need to play more. Chelsea is still a place where I can see that happening.

More is usually better when you’re a young gamer. After hearing the trainer’s encouraging words, I feel prepared to seize the chance when it presents itself.

While this is happening, I need to be flexible. Later on, I may have to make some tough decisions, but the club will let me know.

“The manager told me, “You have everything a player needs.”” Maatsen added when asked about his relationship with Pochettino.

We got along great in part because he is so honest and forthright. If someone wants to talk, they can knock on his door. He is eager to pick the brains of his teammates as well.
