Former Manchester United forward Dimitar Berbatov sees the potential for Harry Maguire to undergo a David Beckham-like redemption journey at Old Trafford.
Berbatov, aged 42, believes that Maguire can draw inspiration from his recent strong performance against Brentford and follow in the footsteps of David Beckham, who rebounded from World Cup disappointment in 1998 to have an exceptional Premier League season.
“Harry Maguire displayed a strong performance against Brentford. The key for him is to maintain focus when given the opportunity and avoid making unnecessary errors,” remarked Berbatov to Betfair. “When he communicates, you can observe that Harry possesses confidence in his abilities. Assuming the captain’s armband has further boosted his confidence, although it’s also elevated his ego.”
During the summer, Maguire was heavily linked with a move away from the club, with West Ham United expressing interest. Nonetheless, he remains with Manchester United and now has the chance to compete for a place in the starting lineup, particularly with injuries affecting players like Lisandro Martinez, Raphael Varane, and Luke Shaw.
While on international duty with England, Maguire shared his thoughts on his future with Manchester United, stating, “I won’t sit around playing only once a month for the rest of my career. If this continues, I’m certain that the club and I will sit down to discuss the situation.”
He added, “It’s not solely my decision whether I start the next game for United. In a few weeks, I’ll return and find out. At present, I haven’t been playing nearly as much as I would prefer. That’s the crux of the matter.”
