Multiple sources indicate that the Boston Red Sox began a purge of their coaching staff on Monday, when they let go of pitching coach Dave Bush and third-base coach Carlos Febles.
After three years in that role, Bush will replace Dana LeVangie as the club’s pitching coach in time for the 2020 season.
Bush, at 43 years old, spent nine years (2004-2011, 2013) as a major league pitcher with the Blue Jays, Brewers, and Rangers.
The Red Sox had a 4.52 team ERA this year, good for 21st in the majors.
The 47-year-old Febles had been the Red Sox’ third-base coach since November 2017, and he was instrumental in the team’s 2018 World Series victory.
He played for the Kansas City Royals for six seasons (1998-2003), during which time he batted.250 in 506 games (with 24 home runs and 146 RBIs).
Febles, a former second baseman with the Red Sox, now coaches the team’s infielders.
After three consecutive last-place finishes in the AL East, the Red Sox’s 78-84 record speaks for itself.
Manager Alex Cora made it obvious this week that the Red Sox will be raising the bar in their coaching work with players next season, even before any staff changes had been disclosed.
Just an hour ago, our coaching staff met, and the general consensus was that we need to find methods to better our players, Cora said.
If you want greater results from your efforts during the past several years, you must be flexible and open to change.
When asked if he would have to make changes to his coaching staff to implement necessary improvements, Cora responded, “I don’t think so.”
He continued, “I think we just have to be better.” We need to be open to making changes to our schedules and meeting new people. We’ve been discussing that all season long.
