Borussia Dortmund is reportedly mulling over the possibility of providing an escape route for Jadon Sancho from Manchester United in the upcoming January transfer window, according to an insider source who spoke with ESPN.
While Dortmund has publicly distanced itself from pursuing their former player following his falling out with Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag, an ESPN source has disclosed that the German club could indeed be interested in a January move under specific financial conditions.
A short-term loan until the conclusion of the season appears to be the most likely scenario, although Dortmund would still require financial assistance from Manchester United to cover part of Sancho’s substantial £300,000-per-week wage.
Jadon Sancho, aged 23, is held in high regard at Dortmund due to his four-year tenure with the Bundesliga club, spanning from 2017 to 2021. He has also maintained contact with coach Edin Terzic. In the interest of squad discipline, Manchester United is willing to entertain offers for Sancho in the January transfer window and is poised to support Ten Hag’s firm stance on the matter.
Sancho has not made an appearance for Manchester United since August after he was excluded from the squad as a consequence of publicly contesting Ten Hag’s decision to omit him from the lineup during the 3-1 defeat at Arsenal on September 3.
Sources have informed ESPN that Manchester United will not take any further steps regarding Sancho, who is currently training in isolation at the club’s academy facilities in Carrington, until he offers an apology. However, there’s a prevailing sentiment that an apology, if received now, over six weeks after the incident, might carry minimal weight.
Some members of the staff believe that Sancho’s Manchester United career, at least as long as Ten Hag remains as manager, may have already reached its conclusion. Sources have revealed that Sancho enjoys little support from senior players within the dressing room, and individuals close to him have already encouraged him to issue an apology.
United, according to an insider, recognizes that the situation cannot be prolonged indefinitely and is prepared to incur a financial loss to facilitate Sancho’s departure in the January transfer window. Sancho arrived in a £73 million deal from Dortmund in 2021 and holds a contract with Manchester United until at least June 2026.
