With two games left, Scotland and Spain both secured their spots in the 2024 European Summer Championship. Spain moved up to 15 points after six qualifying matches in Group A, level with Scotland, after defeating Norway 1-0 in Oslo. In the 49th minute, Gavi scored the game-winning goal, following Alvaro Morata’s earlier goal that VAR had rejected for offside.
Given that they had a 66% possession rate and had 13 shots to Norway’s five, Spain deserved to win. With 10 points from seven games after Sunday’s loss, Norway is now third in Group A and can no longer finish ahead of Scotland or Spain under Erling Haaland, Martin Odegaard, and company.
Since failing to qualify for the 1992 European Championship in Sweden, Spain has now advanced to 16 major tournaments in a row. In the meantime, a Scottish squad will compete in only its second major international competition since 1998—that being Euro 2024. Since 2000, the men’s national team of Norway has failed to qualify for either the World Cup or the Euros.
