At 39 years and 64 days old, the Brazil international became the oldest player in Blues history to play on the field during their match against Newcastle United last weekend.

Silva became Chelsea’s oldest goalscorer thirteen days before Saturday’s match at St. James’ Park with a header against Manchester City, but the defender did not have a memorable experience on Saturday.

After falling behind 2-1, Mauricio Pochettino’s team took a cruel turn when Joelinton, a fellow Newcastle player, stripped Silva of the ball near his own goal. Newcastle quickly scored their third goal, and Anthony Gordon added insult to ιnjury for Mauricio Pochettino’s side.

In what Pochettino called the Blues’ worst game of the season thus far, a 4-1 loss, Silva posted an apology to social media following the match, expressing his “devastation” for his part in the defeat.

We didn’t have a good day. I want to express my deepest regrets to everyone for the loss, but notably to my teammates, who have always had my back and continue to do so. I own up to everything. How about we gather our strength and return even more powerful?

Silva has started every one of Chelsea’s thirteen Premier League games this season, and his continuous importance to the team was recognized in February when he received a contract extension until the summer of 2024.

The future of the defender who has previously played for AC Milan and Paris Saint-Germain has been cast into doubt, meanwhile, because he will be 40 in September and can negotiate with clubs abroad beginning in January.

Evening Standard reports that next year the two sides will meet to talk about the center back’s future; however, Silva is not believed to be planning to retire anytime soon.

Even though his former club Fluminense is interested in reuniting with him next year, the 39-year-old may be willing to continue at Chelsea because he has two boys playing for the Blues at the minor level.

Before being sold to AC Milan in the middle of the 2008–09 season, Silva honed his craft at the Fluminense junior setup. He returned to the Brazilian club in 2006 as a senior player.

Another reason for the Chelsea player to stay put at Stamford Bridge is that, if he were to return to Brazil, his family would presumably still be in Europe.

It is believed that the Blues will try to strengthen their defense with young players in January, and Trevoh Chalobah may be let go as a result. This is apparently happening independent of Silva’s future with the club.

After his deal with Paris Saint-Germain expired in 2020, the South American moved to Chelsea. In 130 appearances for the West London giants across all competitions, Silva has scored six goals and contributed four assists.

In his first year at Chelsea, after suffering years of Champions League heartache with Paris Saint-Germain, Silva won Europe’s highest prize. Since then, he has won the UEFA Suρer Cup and the Club World Cup with Chelsea.
