While Shohei Ohtani may not be donning a Los Angeles Angels jersey for much longer, it didn’t stop it from selling like hotcakes in 2023.
Since Opening Day, Ohtani’s Nike jersey has been the most popular in Major League Baseball, according to sales data from the league’s online store.
The 29-year-old is the first player from Japan to ever top the list. In both 2018 and 2021, he finished in the top ten.
Ohtani’s teammate on the Angels, Mike Trout, ranked tenth. Since his first year in 2012, Trout has consistently appeared on the list of most popular jerseys.
Ronald Acuna Jr. of the Atlanta Braves, who had recently completed a historic 40-homer, 70-steаl season, led the league in shirt sales at the halfway point of the season but finished second overall.
Mookie Betts of the Los Angeles Dodgers, Fernando Tatis Jr. of the San Diego Padres, and Aaron Judge of the New York Yankees rounded out the top five.
Both Joey Votto (13th) and Elly De La Cruz (16th), the youngest player to make the list at age 21 since Acua (20th) in 2018, represent the surging Cincinnati Reds. There have never been more than two Reds players in the top 20 at the same time before.
When Ohtani approaches free agency this winter, however, the jersey might be a bit old.
The two-way sensation might command a record-breаking contract in Major League Baseball, possibly in excess of $500 million. However, an elbow ιnjury will preclude Ohtani from pitching for at least a whole season.
