Ian Maatsen started for Dortmund and assisted in their 4-0 victory over FC Koln.
Chelsea captain Reece James said, “happy for you bro” in response to the left back’s post on Instagram after the game, in which he expressed his joy.
With his inclusion in Dortmund’s starting lineup for that match, Maatsen has now surpassed the number of league starts he had at Chelsea for the season.
Reportedly having a £35 million release clause, Maatsen is currently on loan from Chelsea. Someone is likely to buy him if he can repeat his recent success before the season ends.
More playing time for Ian Maatsen would have been wise for Mauricio Pochettino.
Given the number of injuries Chelsea has suffered at fullback this season, it seems incredible that Maatsen has only started once in the league.
There, the Blues have really struggled, especially with Marc Cucurella out with an ιnjury. Pochettino has preferred central defender Levi Colwill over Ben Chilwell, who has also had trouble staying healthy.
All of the aforementioned points to the possibility that Chelsea will need to spend money on a new left back this summer or during the current transfer window.
The Blues might be better off retaining Maatsen after seeing his play for Dortmund.
However, after being granted a release clause, it appears that Maatsen has played his final game at Stamford Bridge. The fact that the Argentine manager does not fаncy the Netherlands U21 international—a center-back—speaks volumes about his disapproval.
The club is expected to bring in a new left back either this or the next transfer window, according to all indications.
