JEREMY DOKU’S former coaches, who thought he was incompetent and unworthy of a major European league, are shocked by his Manchester City success.
However, they now believe the summer acquisition from Rennes, who paid £55 million, has the potential to become the “best player in the world”.
Jeremy Doku is enjoying a stunning Prem debut season
In his first season in England, the 21-year-old Belgian winger has five assists in nine Premier League games and three goals from 13 games.
But in eight years at Anderlecht, Doku, who was born in Antwerp, infuriated managers.
The youth team coach for Belgium, Benoit Haegeman, stated: “Jeremy disliked using the workout center, running, and defending.
“He was quite confident in himself, but everyone at Anderlecht felt that he still had a lot of improvement to do.
“He needed to improve his placement, strength in the air, and left foot.
“Jeremy was regarded by all members of the club as someone who could play professionally for Anderlecht or another Belgian team.
“But not for Manchester City, one of the best clubs in Europe.
“We are a bit surprised by him, but above all very proud.”
Additionally, Doku’s educational counselor at Anderlecht, Jan Verlinden, stated: “‘Dare and repeat’ was his greatest quality.”
Even after losing possession of the ball, he would attempt the same move once more, sometimes much to his coaches’ dismay.
However, many outside teams, including Chelsea and Liverpool, soon started to monitor his development.
In a movie he directed, Romulu Lukaku attempted to persuade Jeremy to finish his schooling at Anderlecht.
“I fail to see how he can’t advance to become the world’s greatest player. With him, anything is possible.”
