According to sources, Borussia Dortmund and Chelsea have reached a verbal agreement on a loan deal for Ian Maatsen.
The terms of Maatsen’s contract are still being worked out, but it is expected that Dortmund will cover the 21-year-old’s salary during his loan spell in Germany.
To accommodate Maatsen’s move to the Bundesliga giants, Chelsea will have to cancel at least one other loan arrangement, but they are willing to do so.
Chelsea has already met the limit for the amount of players they can loan out to overseas clubs (seven).
Regardless, Maatsen will travel to Germany on Tuesday morning for his medical, which they expect to be completed within the next 48 hours.
Maatsen turned down a permanent move to Burnley after helping the Clarets gain promotion to the Premier League on loan last season.
The Dutchman appeared in 39 Championship games for Burnley, scoring four goals and setting up six more.
Maatsen also spent time on loan at Charlton Athletic and Coventry City before returning to the Premier League giants.
Maatsen has made 15 appearances for Chelsea this season in all competitions, however he has only started once in the Premier League.
After spending time in the development setups at Feyenoord and Sparta Rotterdam, the potential joined Chelsea from PSV’s academy in 2018.
He’ll be trying to receive more first-team minutes in Germany and help Dortmund, who are now fifth in the table, finish the season on a good note.
