Jeff Bezos owns the Koru, a massive 417-foot yacht worth around $500 million.
She is an extraordinary yacht, but, like any other yacht of this size, she cannot really sail near small ports and docks.
And that’s precisely why Bezos spent an additional $75 million to outfit his yacht with a ghost ship.
It is called Abeona and was built by Damen Yachting in the Netherlands.
The Abeona, in nautical jargon, is a shadow boat or support yacht.
In other words, this yacht is designed specifically to support large yachts.
In this case, for Koru.
Jeff Bezos, Abeona, support yacht for KoruDamen YachtingIt can house provisions and supplies and accommodate up to 65 people, 45 passengers, and 20 crew members, including medical personnel.
In car terms, it’s a bit like buying a Ferrari so you can drive to the garage where your Pagani is parked.
But with a fortune of $144 billion, Bezos can certainly afford it.
Most importantly, the yacht is still large enough to include a helipad and additional garages for all tenders, small boats, and jet skis.
Koru, known as Project 721 or Koru (meaning “new beginning” in Maori), is the second largest sailing ship in the world, behind Sailing Yacht A, designed by Philippe Starck and built in the Netherlands.
Besides its $500 million price tag, Koru costs about $40 million in maintenance and docking costs.
Additionally, Abeona has an annual operating cost of $10 million.
That means the Amazon CEO spends $50 million a year just to maintain his yachts.
