Jürgen Klopp Makes Liverpool History with 50th European Win
Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp has etched his name in the club’s history books by becoming the first Liverpool manager to achieve 50 wins in European competitions. Klopp reached this milestone with a 3-1 victory against Austrian club LASK Linz during the opening fixture of the Europa League group stage at Raiffeisen Arena.
Klopp’s side had to stage a comeback after Florian Flecker gave LASK Linz the lead in the 14th minute. The goals for Liverpool were scored by Darwin Núñez, Luis Diaz, and Mohamed Salah, completing the comeback.
Former Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez previously held the record for the most wins in Europe by a Liverpool manager with 49 victories. Klopp’s 50th European win as Liverpool’s manager came in his 82nd match, with an impressive win rate of 60.98%. He has guided the team to 40 victories out of 65 matches in the Champions League and seven out of 14 matches in the Europa League.
In Klopp’s first season at Liverpool, he led the team to the Europa League final, but they were defeated 3-1 by Sevilla. However, he secured his first European trophy for Liverpool in the 2018-19 season when the team won the Champions League final against Tottenham Hotspur with a 2-0 scoreline.
Liverpool has reached the Champions League final two more times under Klopp’s leadership, experiencing defeat against Real Madrid in the 2017-18 and 2021-22 seasons. In addition to the Champions League, Klopp has also won the UEFA Super Cup with Liverpool.
Klopp’s tenure at Liverpool has been marked by unforgettable European nights, including the remarkable 4-0 victory against Barcelona in the 2019 Champions League semi-final and the thrilling 4-3 win over Borussia Dortmund in the 2016 Europa League quarter-final at Anfield.
Liverpool fans are hopeful that Klopp can complete his trophy collection at Liverpool by winning the Europa League this season. While the primary goal is to secure a return to Champions League football, the Europa League holds significant importance, especially with the UEFA Europa Conference League below it, emphasizing the need to take the competition seriously.
