The return of our ’70s standout strip. 👌
At this moment, the colors red, white, and green resurface in honor of a new retro apparel collection that closes the book on fifty years.
The Chelsea ’74 Range derives its name from a notable away uniform that the club once owned. This kit has a drastically different appearance than the majority of our players have worn throughout the years.
This blouse, which was once a favorite among fans, is now available in replica form. A polo shirt, track top, sweatshirt, T-shirt, headwear, scarf, and mug, all featuring the distinctive striped red, white, and green design, are available for purchase.
The shirts worn by Chelsea supporters during the 1974–75 season while away from home were referred to as the “Castrol GTX kit” due to their striking resemblance to the cans of the most-advertised motor oil of that time. This color scheme was ubiquitous on television and at motor races, where sponsored vehicles were easy to identify on the grid.
Thus, what prompted the design of the Chelsea away uniform at the time? It was not uncommon for Chelsea administrators to have an opinion on what their players wore. In fact, Tommy Docherty designed the royal blue shirt, shorts, and white stocks that continue to be our signature ensemble.
Dave Sexton, who succeeded him and helped transform the game in the 1950s, was not the only one who held the ‘Magnificent Magyars’, the Hungarian team that brought about a paradigm shift in the sport. Before the renowned victory at Wembley by Puskas, Hidegkuti, and company, who in England had witnessed a drag-back?

Twenty years later, in a nod to the Hungarians, Sexton sported their colors on a Chelsea change uniform. Although it eventually evolved into the ’74 stripes, it is still a striking design that endures to this day.
Apart from the replica away shirt featured in the Chelsea ’74 collection, the white polo shirt and track top feature club badges and thin-line red and green trim. On the other hand, the sweatshirt and t-shirt prominently feature green and red hues.
The assortment of accessories comprises a bobble knitted headgear, a baseball cap, a bar scarf, and a ’74 mug. An assemblage of these items is displayed in the gallery that follows.
The Chelsea ’74 Range is currently available exclusively at the Megastore at Stamford Bridge and in our online store.
