Diogo Jota’s late goal and Ryan Gravenberch’s first for the Reds kept Jurgen Klopp’s team undefeated in the Europa League
Liverpool were on the receiving end of a colossal blunder by VAR at Tottenham, sparking five days of discussion and back and forth about replaying matches and reforming refereeing.
The match was slanted toward Liverpool when a calamitous error by Union Saint-Gilloise keeper Anthony Moris, who had been in brilliant form either side of his mishap, ruined a stoppage-time goal by Diogo Jota.
Knowing he cost his club dearly, the Luxembourg international will depart Anfield knowing they lost to the Belgian league leaders, who were unbeaten in five European away days last season.Moris has made a number of impressive saves, but he couldn’t handle a very harmless shot to the midsection.Ryan Gravenberch scored his first goal for Liverpool with a tap-in after the goalkeeper lost track of Trent Alexander-Arnold’s weak long-range attempt. The Dutchman was the game’s most impressive performer.
Considering the Reds almost spent £115 million for Moises Caicedo, Gravenberch’s £34 million transfer fee from Bayern Munich on Transfer Deadline Day seems like a steаl. What’s his status at Chelsea like?
Jurgen Klopp remarked, “It is really obvious how good Ryan is.”
He’s having a good time here and seems to be enjoying himself. Gradually, with growing self-assurance. He is almost the same age as the rest of the team, so he blends in well.
When asked if the VAR controversy distracted his team, Klopp said, “We are over it.” We are not some immature bunch. Regarding concentration, it was not an issue.
He’s the first player to do it since Milan Baros in September 2002, when he made his first three starts for Liverpool and scored or assisted on goals in all three games.
And in just three starts, Gravenberch has now matched Jordan Henderson’s season-long goal contribution total.
Gravenberch, 21, made a lot of noise for his team with his blazing runs in the middle and his deft passing near the goal.He helped out defensively well off the ball and might have scored more if not for the heroics of goalkeeper Moris.
After a week of talking about little else, Liverpool and everyone else in the league got talking about the VAR. This time, there’s no room for discussion; it’s obvious that Darwin Nunez was offside when he scored on a close-range tap-in.
Minutes later, Mо Salah put the ball right where he wаnted it, but the Uruguayan blazed his shоt оver the crоssbar frоm six yards оut. Salah himself alsо wasted a fantastic chance after Jarell Quansah’s clearance-cum-pass set him thrоugh оn gоal but Mоris stоpped excellently.
Both before and after Gravenberch’s goal, Moris made numerous additional crucial tackles in either direction. The keeper denied Diogo Jota, Nunez again and Curtis Jones as Union Saint-Gilloise’s rearguard play stood up tall.
In Belgium, Kevin Mac Allister, brother of Alexis Mac Allister (yep, he is named after the figure), played for the league-leading Union Saint-Gilloise, who benefited from investments from Brighton supremo Tony Bloom and enjoyed rare periods of success.
After 26 minutes, their best chance came when an errant clearance found the unmarked Gustaf Nilsson at the back post, but he headed high and wide from five yards out. Mohammed Amoura broke in on goal, dribbled past Alisson, but Ibrahima Konate was there to clean up.
Jarell Quansah, only 20 years old, also delivered a strong performance.
“It was not a hard decision for us,” Klopp said of the team’s decision to start him. We have a great team, but he will still play significant minutes. He’s a treat to watch. When he has the ball at his feet, he is an amazing football player.
Alexis’s substitution at halftime offered Carlos Mac Allister the opportunity to see both of his kids play at the same time. The South American hоt drink mate was shared amongst the brothers before the game. The Liverpool midfielder, who has a photo of himself kissing the World Cup trophy as his phone backdrop from last December, displayed the same grace and poise that led Argentina to victory. He sent an excellent cross, but Moris was able to block Diogo Jota’s header.
On the hour mark, Gravenberch created some space for himself and tried to curl a shot into the top corner, but the keeper had to be at full stretch once more to prevent a second goal of the night.
Substitute Luis Diaz was passed through on goal after Liverpool’s substitution, but he missed the goal.
After all the hype surrounding his nonexistent goal, the fact that the Colombian appeared to be slightly offside was very funny. Equally elusive was Curtis Jones.
Liverpool did not put the game away until the closing seconds of the second half. Union blew a great opportunity with a few of sloppy touches, and then Jota raced clear and calmly converted on the other end.
