Eight months after their successful acquisition of Cody Gakpo from PSV Eindhoven, Liverpool is reportedly exploring a similar move in the final week of the summer transfer window.
Dutch football journalist Rik Elfrink suggests that Liverpool, along with Napoli, is preparing to make an offer for Johan Bakayoko, whom Burnley had previously attempted to sign. The 20-year-old winger is rumored to have an estimated price tag of €25 million to €30 million (£21.5 million to £25.7 million).
Elfrink shared on Twitter: “Johan Bakayoko can go to Burnley. PSV does not want to do this now and can also wait for interest from Liverpool and Napoli, for example. What to do with a higher bid of roughly 25-30 million?”
Bakayoko has impressed at PSV this season, registering four assists in just three Champions League qualifying games, including both of their goals against Rangers in their play-off first leg this week, according to Transfermarkt.
The young winger excels in advancing the ball, as evidenced in statistics from FBref. Outside of Europe’s top five leagues, he ranks in the top 1% of his positional peers for progressive carries per 90 (7.22), and also in the top 5% for successful dribbles (3.07) and touches in the opposition penalty area (5.86) per game.
If Liverpool were to secure Bakayoko’s signature in the coming days, it would resemble the Gakpo signing in many ways. Gakpo, a 24-year-old attacker, also arrived from PSV and joined Liverpool relatively swiftly, rather than being part of a protracted transfer saga.
Bakayoko appears to be an exciting young talent who could bring a buzz to Anfield and provide valuable depth on the right side of attack. However, Liverpool may prioritize other areas of the squad in the remaining days of the transfer window.
Nonetheless, this time of the year can produce unexpected developments, so it remains to be seen if any concrete moves will materialize before the transfer window closes on Friday night.
