Liverpool fans, brace yourselves.,Ronald Koeman has once again made unusual comments, this time targeting Cody Gakpo.
The Dutch star joined Liverpool in January from PSV Eindhoven for a £35 million fee, potentially rising to £45 million with bonus clauses.
Koeman’s remarks, made in an interview with Voetbal International, revolved around Gakpo’s adaptation to Liverpool. Koeman emphasized that Gakpo is still a young player and faced challenges upon joining a struggling Liverpool team.
He suggested that joining a team in good form provides a better opportunity for players to make an immediate impact, while Liverpool required a swift solution, which added to the difficulty. Koeman stressed the need to allow Gakpo time to develop and adjust to the Premier League’s higher level of competition.
Regarding Gakpo’s performance since joining Liverpool, last season, he contributed with 20 goals and 20 assists for both Liverpool and PSV. While his numbers were more impressive in Eredivisie, his transition to Merseyside has been described as seamless.
In the current season, Gakpo has yet to score or provide an assist. Manager Jurgen Klopp responded by giving Nunez an opportunity. However, from Liverpool’s perspective, there are no significant concerns. Gakpo is considered a key player for the team and is held in high regard by Klopp, whose opinion carries significant weight.
Klopp praised Gakpo’s footballing ability and adaptability, noting that he is a versatile player capable of contributing in multiple positions.
Additionally, Liverpool is reportedly exploring the possibility of signing PSV forward Johan Bakayoko. The club has been diligent in their assessment, and several other unnamed Premier League clubs have shown interest. A deal could potentially be finalized in January.
