During England’s 1-0 friendly win over Australia, former Reds midfielder Jordan Henderson was booed by several in the crowd. Liverpool’s Harvey Elliott has since attacked those fans.
Some of the Wembley audience booed when Henderson was taken off in the second half on Friday. The 33-year-old made his first international debut for England since leaving Liverpool in the summer to play for Al Ettifaq of Saudi Arabia.
Elliot told PA(h/t Liverpool Echo) that he was upset by the boos directed towards Henderson because the veteran star has been an inspiration to him.
The booing hurts me since Hendo is a huge influence for a lot of people all around the world.
The young Liverpool player lauded Henderson for all he has done for club and country. Elliott thinks the midfielder should be treated better by England fans in light of his contributions to the team.
It’s not great to witness, considering everything he’s done for England and English football. This is his professional choice. The entire country needs to rally around these athletes. Although it was unkind, I have no doubt that Hendo has moved on.
He plays and lives with an upbeat attitude. He is only interested in furthering his own career interests. They’re all on his side.
Elliott speculated that Henderson’s resilient character would shield him from feeling down about the booing. The Liverpool forward insists his former teammate should have been cheered rather than jeered last Friday.
England manager Gareth Southgate also jumped to Henderson’s defense, calling the reaction from fans “illogical.” In the summer of 2011, while Kenny Dalglish was manager, the seasoned player arrived at Anfield. His impact at Anfield has been tremendous during his 12 years with the Reds. With 492 appearances for the club, he has won every major club award there is.
