After Manchester United’s loss to Crystal Palace, SOFYAN AMRABAT was called a “fish out of water.”
On transfer deadline day, the Moroccan inked a loan deal with the Red Devils.
Erik ten Hag’s tactical gamble of playing Sofyan Amrabat at left-back did not work
Amrabat was singled out for criticism in his makeshift left-back role
Man Utd were left frustrated against Crystal Palace
In United’s 3-0 victory against Crystal Palace in the League Cup midweek match, he had a great first game as a left-back for Manchester United.
But when United played the Eagles in the Premier League today, things turned out differently.
In a smash-and-grab 1-0 victory for Roy Hodgson’s team, United were dismayed by Joachim Andersen’s goal in the first half.
Former Blackburn striker Chris Sutton criticized Amrabat for subpar play in the second half in an interview with BBC 5 Live.
“A goalie would be pleased of that,” he stated, “giving away a free kick after being forced back towards his own goal by (Jordan) Ayew and palming it.
“Like a fish out of water, he hasn’t looked comfortable in that left back position today.”
Supporters expressed agreement with the decision on social media, with one commenting, “I know we’re short on LBs too, but surely Dalot and Lindelof at LB is a better alternative than sticking Amrabat there?
“We can’t keep using Amrabat as an LB,” said the second person.
A third commented, saying that playing Dalot as LB and Lindelof as RB is actually preferable. It is worse to waste Amrabat there.”
Due to an injury problem, Amrabat has been forced into the position, leaving United with just one full-back.
Due to injuries to Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Luke Shaw, United’s natural left-backs Tyrell Malacia, Sergio Reguilon, and Diogo Dalot are the only available right-backs.
Ten Hag’s medical problems worsened when it was discovered that Lisandro Martinez could require more surgery to treat his fractured metatarsal.
Martinez may fill in at left back, but Amrabat has been obliged to fill the void due to his injury.
The Premier League matchup for United, who have had the worst start to a season ever, is against Brentford.
Prior to that, they have a crucial Champions League group stage match against Galatasaray.
