Erik ten Hag has acknowledged that Manchester United has encountered a “problem” in Lisandro Martinez’s recuperation from a metatarsal fracture.
Martinez sustained the injury during United’s 2-2 draw with Sevilla in the Europa League quarter-finals on April 13 and subsequently underwent surgery five days later.
The 25-year-old made his return to the team in the opening pre-season friendly against Leeds United on July 12, but Martinez has faced challenges in terms of form and suffered a setback during the defeat against Arsenal on September 3.After starting in the losses to Brighton and Bayern Munich earlier this month, Martinez is now expected to be sidelined for approximately two months.
“We conducted a thorough diagnosis – both in Argentina and here – but it has now come to light that there was an issue, and it’s very unfortunate for him and the team, as he was not at 100% fitness,” stated Ten Hag. “I believe there was a significant difference between Licha Martinez in recent games and the Licha Martinez we witnessed during his first season here at Manchester United.
“He brings significant value to the team, making a substantial contribution to our performance levels, and if one player’s form declines, it affects the overall performance of the team.” Antony is set to return to Manchester United’s Carrington training base on Saturday, having become available for selection again after a period of leave.
The 23-year-old willingly attended an interview with Greater Manchester Police on Thursday afternoon, responding to allegations of misconduct made by a former girlfriend. Antony has vehemently denied any wrongdoing. Manchester United has decided to make Antony available for selection once more as he has not been arrested, detained, or charged by the police in England or Brazil, where he has cooperated with ongoing investigations in both countries.
Ten Hag has engaged in a conversation with the Brazilian player but is uncertain whether Antony is mentally prepared to be included in the squad for the Champions League clash against Galatasaray on Tuesday. “At this moment, I cannot say. First, he has to return,” emphasized Ten Hag. “I’ve had a conversation with him, but that does not provide insight into his current mental state.”
