Liverpool, Manchester United, and Manchester City will all be closely monitoring their players’ performance and recovery as Argentina faces Bolivia in a World Cup qualifying match in La Paz.
The city is located 11,975 feet above sea level, making it one of the highest capital cities in the world. Playing at such high altitudes can lead to altitude sickness, which includes symptoms like headaches, breathlessness, nausea, and vomiting.
While FIFA once imposed an altitude limit for qualifying matches, the rule was later scrapped after protests, and La Paz was given a special exemption.
Players, including those from Liverpool (Alexis Mac Allister), Manchester United (Lisandro Martinez and Alejandro Garnacho), and Manchester City (Julian Alvarez), will need to cope with the unique challenges of playing at high altitudes.
The clubs will be particularly concerned about how their players recover from the match, given the long flight time back to England. For instance, Mac Allister may not return to training until Thursday after such a journey.
The Premier League teams will be keeping a close eye on their players’ condition and performance in these challenging conditions, especially as they prepare for upcoming league matches.
