Manchester United’s troubles have Andre Onana thinking about skipping AFCON

Onana left Inter Milan for the Premier League this summer after making 41 appearances in his lone season there.

After working together at Ajax, the 27-year-old sealed a £47.3m deal to Man United, where he will be reunited with Erik ten Hag.

Onana has started all 10 of Man United’s competitive matches this season after being named Ten Hag’s starter from the get-go.

The form he shown at Inter and Ajax has eluded him thus far in his time with Man United, where he is a regular starter.

Onana’s start at Old Trafford has been marred by a number of costly errors, particularly in Wednesday’s 3-2 loss to Galatasaray in the Champions League. He has conceded 18 goals in 10 appearances.

Casemiro was sent off for taking down Mauro Icardi of Galatasaray in the penalty area after the goalie had surrendered possession to the striker.

ESPN reports that Onana is debating whether or not to play for Cameroon in January’s Africa Cup of Nations due to his dismal play.

After a disagreement with head coach Rigobert Song in 2022, Onana announced his retirement from international football.

His return to the national team in September helped Cameroon beat Burundi 3-0 and qualify for the tournament in Ivory Coast in January after the government and the Cameroonian FA pressed him to return.

Many believe Onana is hesitant to compete because doing so would force him to miss one month of Man United’s season.

At the moment, Onana is more interested in playing for his club team and is eager to prove his loyalty to Ten Hag’s squad.

The goalie will join his national team for upcoming friendlies against Russia and Senegal after Saturday’s Premier League home game against Brentford.

Meanwhile, Ten Hag has said that he will talk to Onana about the loss to Galatasaray in the midweek, but he still believes the summer signing will get back on track.
