Marcus Rashford thrives for England, while Kalvin Phillips suffers in Italy’s comeback

After recovering from behind with two goals from Harry Kane and a spectacular strike from Marcus Rashford, England qualified for Euro 2024 with two games to spare.

Italy took the lead in the rematch of the Euro 2020 final at Wembley thanks to a goal from former West Ham striker Gianluca Scamacca, who capitalized on some sloppy English defending.

In the 32nd minute, however, England responded when Kane scored a penalty that Jude Bellingham had won with a surging run into the Italy penalty area.

After halftime, Bellingham was pivоtal again as he led an English cоunterattack that оpened the dооr fоr Rashfоrd’s thunderоus shоt.

With Kane’s late breakaway goal, England were certain of victory, and Gareth Southgate’s squad could begin preparing for next summer’s World Cup in Germany.

Gregorio Pickford, 7

With the score tied late in the first half, the goalie made several crucial saves, including one on a break by Destiny Udogie right before halftime. The Italians sputtered in the second half, and Pickford saw little action.

Walker, Kyle, age 6

The veteran right back played with confidence and steadiness, hardly giving Stephan El Shaarway a chance.

Grade 6 John Stones

The central defender isn’t 100% yet, but he’s clearly a class act with the ball in his hands. England may have been caught a yard short of Scamacca for Italy’s first goal, but they were also second-best all over the field.

Age 6 Harry Maguire

Maguire’s plodding style of play in possession left England looking responsible during stretches of the first half when they needed to move the ball more quickly. Although Italy capitalized on some poor defending to score first, Maguire came on strong and made many crucial blocks as the game progressed. Considering the distractions, the central defender held up admirably.

Trippier Kieran, age 5

At times Domenico Berardi and Giovanni Di Lorenzo’s partnership on the Italian right made him feel outnumbered, and he doesn’t look quite as at ease on the left.

Phillips, Kalvin, age 4

Appeared slow from the start, drawing a caution after being late to a handful of challenges in the first 10 minutes. Phillips was on the field to help cover the void left by Rice’s absence, and he should count himself lucky that he didn’t get a second yellow card for a poorly placed challenge. Liberated for the benefit of Jordan Henderson.

Age 6 Declan Rice

Rice’s dominance was on full display when Italy briefly played around him in the middle of the field (Davide Frattesi and Nicolo Barella of Italy were undoubtedly a handful). However, Rice quickly regained control of the situation.

Foden, Phil, age 8

Created several spectacular counterattacks from the center of the field and played a key role in England’s second stunning goal. Maybe isn’t quite as dangerous on the right wing as Bukayo Saka is on occasion, but he has shown glimpses of his true potential in the dangerous inside channels.

Preteen Jude Bellingham

While the rest of England struggled to get going, Bellingham stood out as one of the few bright spots in the first half. A key contributor to England’s equalizer after charging into the area to win a penalty from Harry Kane and then doing it again with a wonderful touch and surge forward to set up Marcus Rashford’s goal. Twenty-year-old England’s top player who earned a rousing ovation for his performance.

Marko Rashford, age 8

It’s incredible what a goal can accomplish. Despite nearly forcing a couple of openings in his duel with Di Lorenzo, he appeared unsure of himself early on. Rashford scored the game-winning goal after cutting in from the left and beating Gianluigi Donnarumma with a stunning strike after to a break by Bellingham. It was a surprising return to form from the previous year.
