The first season of ANDRE ONANA’s Manchester United career is getting worse and worse.
Erik ten Hag brought in the Cameroon international to take the role of veteran goalkeeper David de Gea, who left Old Trafford in the summer.
However, the goalie has had a terrible beginning to his career at the Theatre of Dreams, committing multiple mistakes.
In the Red Devils’ Premier League matchup against Brentford on Saturday, his bad play persisted.
In the 26th minute, the former Ajax keeper let a soft shot from Mathias Jensen slip past him, giving the Bees an unexpected lead.
Former goalie Peter Schmeichel spoke the following with the Premier League Productions program: “Onana, in my opinion, just moved his body. He did not rush to cover.” In the encounter against Bayern Munich, Onana committed the same error—rather than sprinting out towards the ball, he simply moved his body.
“I’m not sure why Onana made errors in his ball-catching technique. He is not me. The approach used to catch low shots is where the mistake is. I believe that pressure is a major factor. I spoke with him following the Galatasaray match and the Bayern Munich game. Onana worries about the errors he has made.
“After the game, you must evaluate your errors. If you’re not prepared for the next game, the same thing will happen again. Onana causes discomfort for the entire crew. They are going to lose faith in him.
Additionally, a large number of United supporters expressed their annoyance at the 27-year-old’s most recent mistake on X (previously Twitter).
“Recall when they said Onana was De Gea’s upgrade,” one person commented.
One more commented, “Onana is terrible.”
Another said, “It seems like Onana is just bad, but I used to think United’s defense was exposing him.”
“Watching Onana play is gonna give me a heart attack,” said one person.
“Another Onana apology incoming,” said one commenter.
“Onana should save that,” a disgruntled Old Trafford supporter uttered.
“Manchester United bought a basket for a keeper,” another person remarked.
Some even asserted that the formerly adored goalkeeper De Gea, who departed the team in June after his contract expired, would be “laughing” at his former team’s current goalkeeping problems.
“De Gea must be laughing his head off,” one person remarked.
“De Gea must be laughing his head off,” another person remarked.
“De Gea must be laughing his head off at us, what a mess,” someone said.
When Scott McTominay came off the bench to score twice and help Manchester United come back from a 1-0 deficit to win 2-1, Onana’s blushes were spared.
In as many games, Onana has made two mistakes; his first came during United’s 3-2 loss to Galatasaray on Tuesday.
He gave the ball to Dries Mertens carelessly in the 77th minute, which forced Casemiro to bring the Belgian international out in the penalty area and receive a straight red card.
But Mauro Icardi spared himself the humiliation when he dragged the subsequent penalty wide of his right-hand post.
