NEWCASTLE are allegedly interested in signing Man City outcast Kalvin Phillips in January.
Following a £42 million move from Leeds last year, the 27-year-old England midfielder has made just 15 Premier League outings.
Phillips is still in Gareth Southgate’s plans for the Three Lions, having started last night’s 3-1 triumph against Italy.
But, with the Euros on the horizon, he understands he needs to be playing consistently to ensure a starting berth.
According to the Northern Echo, Newcastle are poised to rescue Phillips from Manchester City with a January swoop.
Eddie Howe has a history of bringing in native talent at St James’ Park, having signed Dan Burn and Anthony Gordon since his arrival.
Howe is known to admire Phillips’ work rate and technical ability, with the midfielder always looking to explode into the box.
And, despite the strong competition, Phillips would be given a fair shot to get into Newcastle’s XI.
“I know that I need to be playing games and competing every weekend,” Phillips stated of his future plans.
“I’ll have to make a decision in the coming months.”
“I’m very competitive but I want to play football.”
Meanwhile, SunSport can exclusively reveal that the Toon are interested in signing Victor Boniface.
The Nigerian striker has been on fire for his new team, Bayer Leverkusen.
And Howe believes Boniface can give depth to his front line.
Harvey Barnes is out with a long-term injury, and Boniface’s arrival may allow Alexander Isak to move to the wing.
Howe is also aware that Callum Wilson will turn 32 in February and will be entering the final 18 months of his contract.
