By virtue of the activation of a clause, Ian Maatsen’s contract with Chelsea has been prolonged until June 2025, while FC Barcelona monitors the player.

WHAT TURNED OUT? Since 2018, the 21-year-old has been a member of the Chelsea squad. Following fruitful loan stints with Charlton, Coventry, and Burnley, he made his Premier League debut last year. He contributed 101 points to Vincent Kompany’s squad’s championship-winning effort the previous year.

The Blues have exercised their option to extend Maatsen’s contract until the following summer, when it was scheduled to expire. Barcelona contemplated acquiring the burgeoning talent in January via a free transfer or a discounted transaction.

Maatsen has been utilized as a substitute on six occasions in the Premier League this season due to his inability to surpass fellow newcomer Levi Colwill in the starting lineup. Although Maatsen is also capable of playing on the flanks, he has only appeared in defense during his time under manager Mauricio Pochettino.
