On this day in Braves history, spanning various years

2020 – Ian Anderson delivers an outstanding performance on the mound, while Adam Duvall and Marcell Ozuna both blast home runs off Raisel Iglesias in the eighth inning, securing a 5-0 victory over the Reds in the Wild Card round. Braves pitchers maintain a shutout streak of 22 innings in the series.

 

1919 – Just before Game 1 of the World Series, the Chicago White Sox become the betting underdogs in the best-of-nine series. Eddie Cicotte, a 29-game winner, is forced out of the game in the fourth inning, resulting in a five-run fourth inning for the Reds. Dutch Ruether, the Reds’ starter, throws a six-hitter and contributes three RBIs in a surprising 9-1 upset victory.

 

1932 – Babe Ruth famously points to the outfield and hits a home run at Wrigley Field during the fifth inning of Game 3 of the World Series. The Yankees emerge victorious with a 7-5 win, with both Ruth and Lou Gehrig each hitting two home runs.

1961 – Roger Maris smashes his 61st home run of the season, breaking Babe Ruth’s 34-year-old single-season record. The Yankees secure a 1-0 victory in the game.

 

1970 – The Phillies defeat the Montreal Expos 2-1 in the final game played at Connie Mack Stadium. Fans swarm the field and cause destruction at the end of the game.

1988 – Tony Gwynn collects two hits, raising his season average to .313. He becomes the first player to win the batting title with an average below .320.

 

2004 – Ichiro Suzuki records two hits, surpassing George Sisler’s 84-year-old record of 257 hits in a single season. Ichiro concludes the year with an impressive 262 hits.
