Paul Merson suggests that Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has the luxury of resting Luis Diaz away at Wolves on Saturday, with Cody Gakpo or Diogo Jota capable of filling in for the Colombian winger.
Liverpool is set to play at Molineux in a 12:30 kick-off as the Premier League resumes after the international break. Diaz, Gakpo, and Jota all had international duty with their respective nations, but Merson believes Diaz might be the player most in need of a rest.
Diaz returned to Liverpool later than most of the squad, arriving at 09:00 on Friday morning. He was among the last players to return from international duty, with Alexis Mac Allister also arriving back in England at 04:00 on Friday after representing Argentina. Neither player reported for training on Friday morning.
Diaz had played for Colombia in two 2026 World Cup qualifiers, starting in both matches and accumulating 159 minutes of playing time. Colombia won 1-0 against Venezuela and drew 0-0 against Chile. Diaz has been an important part of Klopp’s plans this season, starting in all four of Liverpool’s Premier League fixtures and contributing with goals and assists.
Merson suggests that Klopp can afford to rest Diaz for the Wolves game, given the quality and form of players like Cody Gakpo and Diogo Jota, who both scored for their countries during the international break.
