Fears about the degree of Erling Haaland’s ankle injury have been allayed, with the Manchester City striker likely to be healthy for Sunday’s game against Chelsea.
Haaland was injured just before halftime of Saturday’s 6-1 thumping of Bournemouth, but notified boss Pep Guardiola 24 hours later that the discomfort had subsided.
The 22-year-old trained on Monday ahead of tonight’s Champions League showdown with Young Boys, but Guardiola may opt to rest him as a precaution.
Haaland is scheduled to return to international duty next week, however Norway will only face the Faroe Islands in a friendly and Scotland in a Euro 2024 qualifying dead rubber.
When Haaland represents his country, sports therapist Mario Pafundi goes with him, and City will keep a tight check on any lingering affects, with the Treble winners facing Liverpool, Tottenham, and Aston Villa in the coming weeks.
‘I will listen to the physicians,’ Guardiola stated. ‘He informed me yesterday that he felt a lot better than on game day, but I’m not sure.
‘If he claims he’s ready and isn’t in discomfort, I’ll consider him for the game. If Erling is unable to play, Julian (Alvarez) will fill in. Julian is very good! I like him as a striker, but he can also play in midfield.’
City will be in the knockout stages for the 11th consecutive season if they win on Tuesday night.
Guardiola claimed that this is the most cohesive squad he has managed in his eight years at City.
‘It’s the finest mood we’ve had in many years,’ he continued. ‘I’ve never had such a wonderful, lovely set of people in my life.’
