At that point, Reece James’s frustrations became too much to bear. James was named captain by Mauricio Pochettino despite not having played for Chelsea since the opening weekend’s draw with Liverpool at Stamford Bridge. After James lost his temper with an official in the tunnel, the Football Association announced a charge against him for abusive conduct three days later, and it seemed inevitable that he would be suspended for one game.

The move of the Wolves vs. Chelsea match to Christmas Eve has been criticized as a “unwanted present.”

James was still injured on October 2, thus Chelsea’s shipment did not arrive in time for their game against Fulham. That’s not how it went down, though. Instead, Pochettino said that James would be available for selection when they played Burnley on October 7.

Pochettino would also recognize aspects of himself in James—the unwavering confidence, the ability to play on the sheer adrenaline of game day, for example. It was brought to Pochettino’s attention that he had been given a yellow card for dissent during the Burnley game. One of his connections is to Mikel Arteta, the manager of Arsenal; the two are very similar and have known each other from their days as PSG teammates.

Pochettino refers to Arteta as “family” because of their close relationship. At the time of their early 2001 arrival to PSG, Pochettino was 28 and Arteta was 18. Pochettino was immediately taken by Arteta, who impressed him with his charm and understanding of the game. Pochettino said, “Already, he was a coach,” indicating that he has no problem with Arteta’s theatrical touchline behavior.

In his words, “it’s how you are and about your character,” Pochettino emphasized the importance of being a team player. His heart is in football. Even at age 51, there are times when I feel like life’s choices have been bad or unfair. Clearly, you like to win. Just like Mikel and I, and all the other coaches who used to play football, we all think we can still play. We retain some remnants of our animal nature. We can’t afford to be thinkers.”

Pochettino may feel that it’s more important to let his feelings out than to try to stifle them. James’ general mood has improved since the team’s victories at Fulham and Burnley, as well as the Carabao Cup triumph over Brighton on the day he was charged.
