During Chelsea’s Premier League match against Manchester City, Raheem Sterling collided with former teammate Phil Foden, leaving football fans astonished.
Sterling was one of Maurico Pochettino’s standout performers as Chelsea drew 4-4 with triple champions Manchester City.
Raheem Sterling was booked for a challenge on Phil Foden against Man City
The winger took out his former team-mate
Following Erling Haaland’s opener and Thiago Silva’s equalizer, he put his team ahead in the 37th minute.
However, goals from Nicolas Jackson, Cole Palmer, Manuel Akanji, Rodri, and Haaland ensured that the points were shared at Stamford Bridge.
With the scores equal late in the game, Sterling startled Chelsea supporters by fouling Foden on the edge of the penalty box.
The Chelsea winger made a strong tackle on the City star but did not grab any of the ball.
Man City were next awarded a free kick, but Kyle Walker’s attempt went over the crossbar.
Fans reacted to Sterling’s challenge on social media, with some suggesting that it would have hurt his prospects of rejoining Gareth Southgate’s England group.
Someone else said: “Sterling just tried to get his place in the England team himself by smashing Foden.”
Another person said, with a grin, “Sterling trying to get in the England squad by slicing Foden in half.”
A third person said: “Sterling taking Foden out to get himself back in the England squad at his expense.”
On the other hand, a fourth person commented: “Sterling doing everything he can to get into the England squad with that tackle on Foden.”
Sterling was once again left out of the England squad earlier this week, much to the chagrin of many fans.
Southgate said of the winger’s contentious absence from the squad, “We don’t need to know about his quality, his personality.”
“He is an important part of why we’ve had the journey we’ve had in recent years.” I can only reiterate what I’ve said in meetings: we’re playing extremely well, and who can I leave out?”
Despite missing points, Manchester City remains atop the Premier League table, while Chelsea remains tenth.
