Brent Suter was officially signed by the Cincinnati Reds today. We knew the move was coming and wrote about it on Thursday, but Suter still needed to pass a physical and then put his signature on certain documents. Now that it had happened, the Reds needed to make room on the 40-man roster, and in order to do so, reliever Daniel Duarte had to be assigned.
Prior to signing as a free agent with Cincinnati in 2020, Duarte was a member of the Rangers and Kansas City Royals organizations after signing his first professional contract with the Texas Rangers out of Mexico in 2013. In June of that year, the Reds dismissed him due to the cancellation of the minor league season. He was still without a job a year and a day later, but he signed a minor league contract with the Reds once more.
In the offseason, Cincinnati added him to their 40-man roster, and he was called up for his major league debut in April 2022. He was placed on the injured list a little over two weeks later and did not return for four and a half months. Throughout the season, he would only pitch in three major league games, giving up three runs in 2.2 innings. After the season, Duarte chose to pursue free agency and was placed on assignment; however, he signed a minor league contract and returned to the team after just four days.
The Reds brought up Duarte again in mid-June following his impressive Triple-A performance. He traveled back and forth a bit over the summer, but while he was with Cincinnati, he was able to score runs at a solid clip until he was placed on the injured list during the last week of the regular season due to shoulder soreness. He pitched 31.2 innings with a 3.69 ERA in 31 appearances, going 3-0 with a save.
Duarte did, however, tread carefully because he only had 23 strikeouts while walking 20 batters. He had seven runners inherited during those thirty-one games, and he kept none of them from scoring. His career statistics are available here.
