Jurgen Klopp, manager of Liverpool, was impressed with Ryan Gravenberch’s “obvious talent” after the midfielder scored his first goal for the club in a 2-0 victory over Union Saint-Gilloise.
The Netherlands international, a £34 million summer signing from Bayern Munich, made only his third start of the season, and after impressing in the first European outing another all-around effort was topped by what he described as “the easiest goal of my career.”
A minute before halftime, Gravenberch scored when goalkeeper Anthony Moris made a mistake and fumbled a shot by Trent Alexander-Arnold, setting up an easy tap-in for the 21-year-old.
It was an important goal as Liverpool had wasted a number of chances prior to that and although they were rarely in trouble Diogo Jota’s goal in added time at the conclusion of the second half secured a second successive Europa League triumph.
After only three Premier League substitute appearances due to arriving after the transfer deadline, Klopp gushed about the player, saying, “It is really obvious how good he is, the talent he is.”
That he is taking advantage of the situation and regaining his self-assurance is a welcome development.
As the coach explained, “we thought he might be able to play 90 (minutes), we wаnted to give him 90 but we saw he dropped a bit so that’s why we took him off.”
Jota scored his fourth goal of the season in response to being sent out for two yellow cards on Saturday, which will prevent him from playing in Sunday’s match against Brighton.
What should he do?” he asked. I anticipated that it would be tough. We, and especially Diogo, have moved past that (controversial loss to Tottenham). The two of us are not young.
Focusing on the game was not an issue, but maintaining that concentration during play was a challenge, at least superficially.
It had nothing to do with the previous game or the previous week, but I thought we were a little lethargic there, which I didn’t enjoy. That’s always the tough part of football.
Two successive wins takes Liverpool two points clear at the top of Group E and victory over Toulouse, two points behind, in three weeks’ time would put them on the verge of qualification for the knockout stages.
A lot of chances were squandered, and the team seemed to lose its footing in the second half, so it was far from the free-flowing performances seen this season.
“(I enjoyed) the start and the result. The targets, the opportunities we made. What I didn’t like after the first 25 minutes is that we lost our rhythm,” Klopp said.
“It’s quite challenging to maintain a steady beаt in these kinds of games, but it’s crucial. Our second goal came in the nick of time when we really needed it.I’m not furious or worried about it; it’s just the way competitions work and we need to make greater most of our chances to win. Obviously, we need to step up our game.
The phrase “mature professional performance” is derived from the phrase “mature professional performance,” which translates to “the mature professional performance, the we received the result of.
Union coach Alexander Blessin was disappointed in his team as they failed to gain any momentum by holding the hosts at bay for nearly the entire first half despite knowing they were with a tough position from the get-go.
“We saw the strength of Liverpool,” he continued, “and I’m proud of the team.”
To paraphrase, “I had the feeling that the game changed” after Liverpool’s early lead.
