Stats like these demonstrate why Ten Hag’s £47 million risk to switch De Gea for Onana was a grave error for Manchester United

When ANDRE ONANA arrived from Inter Milan this summer, it was expected that he would save Manchester United.

Because of his exceptional footwork, the £47 million player was signed to replace David De Gea, but alarming statistics indicate that the Red Devils made a grave error in their selection.

After De Gea won the Premier League Golden Glove award for the most clean sheets the previous season, Onana arrived at Old Trafford to take De Gea’s place.

The Spaniard, who was formerly hailed as the greatest goalie in the world, spent more than 12 years in Manchester.

However, as time went on, concerns about his distribution arose, and in his latter seasons at United, a number of commentators believed the goalie was falling behind the “modern day goalkeeper.”

For this reason, Ten Hag made the ruthless choice to replace De Gea, although statistics indicate that the player who filled his gloves is doing noticeably worse.

There is a glaring difference in key statistics between Onana’s tenure at Manchester United and De Gea’s last three seasons.

Since taking over in goal, Ten Hag’s new addition has given up 1.8 goals on average every game, compared to De Gea’s 1.23 goals per game average.

Since joining the Manchester United team, Onana has also committed errors, and as of right now, he averages one error that results in a goal every 10 games, as opposed to De Gea’s one goal per twenty games.

Furthermore, the Cameroonian is only stopping 65.7% of the shots that are aimed at him, whereas De Gea stopped just under 70% of the shots that were attempted.

Fans might also point out that Onana’s primary selling point was his ability to use his feet considerably better than the man he succeeded.

However, statistics from Manchester United’s 3-2 Champions League loss to Galatasaray last night reveal the keeper’s startlingly poor distribution.

Against the Turkish team, only 57% of Onana’s passes resulted in a Man United player finding their target, with an embarrassing 16 misdirected balls going unnoticed.

To make matters worse, he was nearly totally to blame for Galatasaray’s penalty after putting the ball straight into Dries Mertens’ path, who Casemiro had to pull down to save a certain goal.

Because Casemiro had already been booked and received a second yellow card for the foul earlier in the game, United was also reduced to 10 men as a result.

Fortunately, Mauro Icardi’s spot kick misses the post, saving Onana’s blushes.

However, a few minutes later, in another stunning move that didn’t give Onana much of a showcase, the Argentine striker dinked the ball over the goalkeeper.

And following a string of subpar performances from their number 24, United supporters’ patience is wearing thin.

After being let go by United, De Gea is still without a club. Some fans have even been nostalgic for his earlier days after the 32-year-old teased them online with a mysterious post yesterday night.
