Following another error by goalkeeper Andre Onana against Galatasaray, Erik ten Hag has reaffirmed his support for the player
After the Cameroonian threw a terrible pass right into the hands of a pressing Dries Mertens, Casemiro recklessly slid tackled the forward, earning himself a second yellow card. Then Mauro Icardi was handed a spot-kick, but he missed it.
That didn’t really matter, though, because Icardi’s 81st-minute winner gave Galatasaray the lead back moments later. United failed to bounce back and suffered their second consecutive Champions League loss.
Many Reds have received harsh criticism for their performances, and they will still receive it in the days to come. Onana’s existence at Old Trafford has been quite unstable to begin with, and pressure is still building on him.
Ten Hag supports Onana
However, Ten Hag stated after the game (via Hayters): “We are happy with our goalkeeping group – definitely with Andre. He has the full support of the manager.” Andre, come on, he’s capable of becoming among the world’s finest goalkeepers; he’s been in the final of the previous season and one semifinal of the Champions League. He will act on it, as he has demonstrated.
The manager went on, “We have already witnessed his great capabilities in games.” Moreover, his character following a gaffe. He’ll get better. He’ll undoubtedly perform well in the upcoming games as well.
