A “not human” goalkeeping display in 2015 was dubbed the best Lionel Messi had ever seen.
144 different goalkeepers who gave up on Messi while he was at Barcelona received bottles of beer from Budweiser in 2020. The majority of goalkeepers Messi has faced have been unable to stop him.
One of those winners was Fraser Forster, who had given up one goal to him during Celtic Park’s 2-1 victory over the Blaugrana back in 2012.
He was also in goal in the rematch, which Barca won 2-1 thanks to a late strike from Jordi Alba.
However, the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner was deeply impressed by Forster’s heroics in between the sticks and even stated that he was once a target for the Catalan team.
Messi reportedly stated, “The performances of Fraser Forster against us were talked about for a long time,” according to the Daily Star.
“It is the best goalkeeping display I have ever witnessed; there was one game in Scotland where he was not human.”
“We even discussed Victor Valdes playing here when he said he was going. I was certain that he would play for Manchester United, Arsenal, or Chelsea.”
Messi’s lone goal past Foster came in the 90th minute as a consolation, and the 35-year-old earned the moniker “The Great Wall of Glasgow” after making seven stops.
After leaving Celtic for Southampton in 2014, he played 162 games before making a temporary comeback to the Bhoys in 2019–20.
