Is Mount ready to go?
Mason Mount played a brilliant 45 minutes from midfield on Tuesday night, so moving him would be churlish. Bruno Fernandes may need to start on the right again, but that has proven to be effective in the past as well—most recently at Turf Moor.
Erik ten Hag will have grown even more fond of Hannibal Mejbri due to his running stats, and it’s possible that his early departure during the League Cup victory over Crystal Palace was telling. The past week has been so positive for United that, had United’s defense not been so weak, the excellent Sofyan Amrabat might have returned to the bench for this weekend’s rematch.
Amrabat to make an appearance?
Sergio Reguilon’s absence forces Amrabat to play left back going forward. Ten Hag also has no intention of looking to the Under-21 team anytime soon. Bolton destroyed them 8-1 on Tuesday night in the EFL Trophy.
Amrabat and Mount will eventually probably start for United on a regular basis because Antony’s status is still unknown. This season, Antony has repeatedly performed below expectations when he has played.
Amrabat can go into midfield when he plays full-back, but he will need to take a step up when facing Palace’s league squad.
On how many levels?
For the League Cup match, Ten Hag rested six players, and it looks likely that Fernandes, Victor Lindelof, Marcus Rashford, and Rasmus Hojlund will be back.
Ten Hag ought to be able to refrain from starting more goalkeepers on the bench for whichever squad he chooses.
A more robust bench?
Midweek saw the names of two goalkeepers on the bench, but Scott McTominay and Christian Eriksen are back for United. The starting lineup for United is usually known, and the following players could be on the bench: Facundo Pellistri, Jonny Evans, Eriksen, Dan Gore, Garnacho, Anthony Martial, and Altay Bayindir.
Anticipate Palace’s arrival
The midweek League Cup matchup was viewed by Palace as a minor nuisance. There were six changes, only a few hundred of their supporters made the trip, and Roy Hodgson didn’t appear very excited about the game.
Odsonne Edouard, Marc Guehi, Eberechi Eze, and Sam Johnstone all appear certain starters today. Since September 2017, when Palace had lost their first six Premier League games, Eze excelled during his cameo at Old Trafford, and Palace has not suffered a significant loss at United.
Hodgson was eighteen days into his first spell at the 4-0 (which was, coincidentally, six years ago today). Since then, Palace has emerged as a competitive M16 visitor, having won two and drawn one of their previous five games. During those seasons, United’s record was 0-0, 1-2, 1-3, 1-0, and 2-1.
