Looking like they could win all 3 points in the opening match, Atletico Madrid suddenly let Lazio draw 1-1 after a close-range header from goalkeeper Ivan Provedel in the 90+5 minute.

Ivan Provedel became the fourth goalkeeper to ever score in the Champions League with the equalizer in the 90++5 minute for Lazio in their opening match in Group E when hosting Atletico Madrid in the early morning of September 20.

The 29-year-old goalkeeper kept the home team a point with the final touch of the match when he scored a stunning header after Luis Alberto’s pass.

Since 2009, when goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama successfully scored a penalty for Hapoel Tel-Aviv in the match against Lyon, has another goalkeeper scored in Europe’s top tournament.  

Ivan Provedel’s goal brought a worthy point to Lazio, as the home team had 19 shots compared to Atletico Madrid’s 9.

In this match, 20-year-old Pablo Barrios helped coach Diego Simeone’s team take a 1-0 lead in the 29th minute in his first appearance in this tournament. It was a rather lucky goal when the ball hit Kamada’s foot and changed direction, leaving goalkeeper Provedel helpless as he had previously fallen in the opposite direction.

Lazio became more and more deadlocked throughout the second half. Atletico could have even increased the score, but Witsel had a shot blocked and Morata hit the post. The match was torn apart by many fouls and cards from both sides, but the drama happened in the last minute.

Atletico goalkeeper Oblak played well from the beginning of the match with many unbelievable saves, but in the 90+5 minute, in a situation where Atletico’s defense lost concentration, goalkeeper Provedel broke the offside trap and headed the ball home. Oblak’s net, resulting in a 1-1 draw.
