United vs Brentford preview: Mason Mount to partner Casemiro in a 3-4-3 formation

Erik ten Hag may opt for a tactical shift to address the defensive issues plaguing his Manchester United side this season, switching to a 3-5-2 formation.

United has conceded 11 goals in 7 Premier League matches and 7 goals in two Champions League games this season. New goalkeeper Andre Onana has struggled to settle in, and last season’s defensive stalwart, Casemiro, appears fatigued and has become a target for opposition coaches.

If Sergio Reguilon is fit to play against Brentford on Saturday, Sofyan Amrabat could transition to a holding midfield role to support Casemiro. However, if the Spurs loanee is unavailable, a back three might be deployed to shore up the leaky defense. This could see Harry Maguire join forces with Victor Lindelof and Raphael Varane in defense, taking a gamble given Maguire’s recent form, though he performed well against Crystal Palace in the Carabao Cup last Tuesday.

Diogo Dalot and Amrabat would operate as wing-backs, while Casemiro might be partnered by Mason Mount, Bruno Fernandes, or Christian Eriksen in central midfield. Despite his recent form struggles, Marcus Rashford is expected to retain his place in the team, with Alejandro Garnacho serving as an impact substitute. Rasmus Hojlund will lead the line.

If not deployed in midfield, Bruno Fernandes could assume the right-wing role, or if he operates in midfield, Antony might return to the starting lineup, with Mount potentially moving to the bench. Luke Shaw, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Lisandro Martinez, and Tyrell Malacia remain long-term absentees, with Jadon Sancho still not in favor in Ten Hag’s dressing room.

Kobbie Mainoo has returned to training and could feature on the bench, but it might be too soon for him. Amad Diallo is also nearing a return but is unlikely to make the squad.
